An interesting thing...
An interesting thing happened to me just the other day. Tuesday, actually. I'll start at the beginning. ("and when you get to the end... Stop!")
Tuesday morning I got up and went to co op. Classes went pretty well, I was able to pay attention for the most part, and I enjoyed the time with my friends. After classes were over, I talked to a few friends, and somehow ended up with Aaron Morrison in our van with us. (Turns out he didn't want to go to his sister's science class so he was hanging out with us until basketball practice)
Driving along the road, after stopping for lunch, we saw our friend Savannah on the road. Ruth called her and said we were right behind her, so we waved. That's when you realize how long two seconds is. That is, in fact, how long Rachael (the driver) looked away. One second I was happily waving to a friend, the next second, the van was going crazy. Everyone yelled, some people screamed, and no one knew exactly what was going on. Then we figured it out. We had hit the car in front of us. In turn, it hit the car in front of it.
The next thirty minutes were... interesting? Rachael, extremely upset about the whole thing, Ruth, shaking like I've never seen before. James crying just because he was scared. I kept telling myself "Hannah, you're the glue. Hold it together! You're the glue, you can't fall apart now!" Aaron, just there giving hugs and praying for everything.
After that thirty minutes on the intersection on 52 and 26 (that's what my dad said, at least.) Ruth, another lady, and a boy were all taken to the hospital. Now worries, however. It was only whiplash, and the lady and Ruth both came home that day. I don't know exactly about the guy, but we are assuming he's fine.
About when they were putting Ruth on the stretcher (because they were very concerned about this whiplash thing...) I finally broke down. I just couldn't be the strong one anymore when I was so scared in general. That's when Aaron just gave me a hug and told me it was going to be ok.
My dad came over to the site of the accident and picked us up and took us to the hospital to make sure Ruth was ok and to get her. Aaron stayed with us the whole time and just talked. Rachael was silent. After two and a half hours of waiting, Mrs. Morrison finally came to get Aaron to take him to basketball practice because my mom had decided James and I were not going. A few minutes after they left, Ruth came out (perfectly fine, just her neck hurt a bit) and we went home.
It wasn't until that night that I realized that I hadn't really been the glue. I was for a little while, but really I was more like... I actually found myself comparing the people to tape. Ruth was paper. Rachael was paper. James was construction paper. I was scotch tape. Aaron was duct tape. He was really the one who held everyone together. I don't know what would have happened if he hadn't been there for us, just reminding us that "God knew this was gonna happen."
I have imagined an older brother. Not unusual, considering I always wanted one, but I never imagined I would get such a good one.
I just thank God for Aaron, and my family and all the rest of my friends. The wreck kinda made me think a little bit more about the mortality of human beings. I love you guys!
